Island On Bird Street, The

Description:
To cope with living in a walled ghetto in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, eleven-year-old Alex escapes his problems by reading. As he, his uncle and father are marched toward a deportation train, the father and uncle create a diversion and Alex escapes to their designated hiding place. Stefan insists the boy wait for him, no matter what happens. There, in the hiding place, Alex immerses himself in his favorite book,

This story manages to be warm and engaging, despite having for its backdrop one of the most devastating and shameful periods in history. Well-written and acted. A good way to educate your children about the period of Nazi occupation.
